Alfonsina y el Mar de Mercedes Sosa

Mercedes Sosa: La Negra, La Voz de America (9 July 1935 – 4 October 2009) was an Argentinian singer and one of the founders of La Nueva Cancion en Latin America, a movement that returned South American music to its native indian roots, adding social commentary and protesta to its lyrics. As a result of Jorge Videla's coup d'etat in 1976, Mercedes Sosa was persecuted for her leftist ideals and outspoken music, and was exiled to Paris and then to Madrid. She returned to Argentina in 1982, performing a series of historical concerts at Teatro Opera de Buenos Aires right before the dictatorship was forced to cede to a civilian government

The song you're about to listen to is Alfonsina y el Mar, composed by Ariel Ramírez and Félix Luna. It's dedicated to Alfonsina Storni an Argentinian poet who committed suicide by throwing herself into the sea. In the song, she simply walks into the ocean to play with with sea horses and mermaids never to return. The refrain "y te vaz mas alla como en sueños, dormida Alfonsina vestida de mar" loosely translates to "and you leave, far away like in dreams, asleep Alfonsina dressed like the sea".

Ciao,
